You are swapping out a motherboard, upgrading an SSD, or migrating your setup to a new desktop, and suddenly you hit a roadblock: you need to know exactly which Windows edition you are running and whether your license will survive the move. Or perhaps an “Activate Windows” watermark appeared after an update, or a software program is demanding a specific build before installing.
Before modifying system files or buying a new operating system, you need three pieces of information: your version, your product key, and your license type. These terms are frequently confused, but they serve completely different purposes:
- Windows Version and Edition: Specifies your feature tier (such as Home, Pro, or Enterprise) and update build (such as 23H2 or 22H2). This determines which features, security policies, and management tools your PC supports.
- Product Key: A 25-character code structured in five groups of five characters (such as XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX) used to authenticate your installation with Microsoft activation servers.
- License Type (Channel): The legal contract governing your copy of Windows (Retail, OEM, or Volume). This determines whether your license stays permanently tied to your current machine or can transfer to a new PC.
You can locate every piece of this data in under two minutes using built-in Windows tools.
Find Your Windows Version and Build Number
When software developers list minimum system requirements, they rarely just mean “Windows 11.” They often require a specific feature update or build architecture for compatibility with system APIs. You can check your version using three distinct methods.
Method 1: The Quickest Visual Check (winver)
If you need a fast snapshot of your edition and build number without digging through menus, use the native Windows Version utility:
- Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.
- Type winver and press Enter or click OK.
- A compact window titled About Windows will appear. The top line reveals your main operating system edition (such as Windows 11 Pro), while the second line lists your version number (such as Version 23H2) and exact OS build (such as Build 22631.3007).
Method 2: The Settings App (Detailed Specs)
To confirm whether you are running a 64-bit (x64) or ARM-based system alongside your feature update history, check the Settings panel:
- Open Settings by pressing Windows Key + I.
- Click System in the left sidebar, then scroll down and select About at the bottom of the right pane.
- Under Device specifications, locate System type to confirm whether your processor and operating system are 64-bit or 32-bit.
- Scroll down to Windows specifications to view your Edition, Version, installation date, and OS Build.
Method 3: Command Prompt and PowerShell
If you manage machines remotely, write scripts, or prefer terminal environments, you can pull build details directly from the command line.
Open Command Prompt and run:

Alternatively, open PowerShell and run this command to generate a structured overview of your OS profile:

Determine Your Windows License Type (Retail, OEM, or Volume)
Knowing your Windows edition is only half the equation. If you plan to build a new system or replace a dead motherboard, your license type determines whether you can carry Windows over for free or must buy a new copy.
To discover your license channel, use the Windows Software Licensing Management Tool. Press Windows Key + R, type the following command, and press Enter:
slmgr.vbs /dli
Within a few seconds, a Windows Script Host window will appear. Check the Description line for one of three primary channels:
- Retail Channel: Purchased directly from Microsoft, an online retailer, or as a physical boxed copy. Retail licenses grant full transfer rights. You can deactivate Windows on your current computer and activate it on a new PC, provided it is active on only one machine at a time.
- OEM Channel (Original Equipment Manufacturer): Pre-installed by a manufacturer (such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, or ASUS) or bought as a system-builder disc. OEM licenses lock permanently to the first motherboard they activate on, meaning they cannot be legally transferred to a different computer.
- Volume (GVLK / KMS / MAK): Purchased in bulk by businesses and educational institutions. These are centrally managed through a Key Management Server (KMS) or Multiple Activation Keys (MAK). If a personal home computer shows a Volume license, the system was likely owned by an organization or activated using an unauthorized commercial workaround that will eventually expire.
Retrieve Your 25-Character Windows Product Key
How you recover your product key depends on how your copy of Windows was originally acquired.
1. Embedded BIOS/UEFI Key (OEM Systems)
Modern laptops and pre-built desktops no longer ship with product key stickers attached to the case. Instead, the 25-character OEM key is written directly into the motherboard’s UEFI firmware. If you perform a clean install of Windows, the installer reads this key automatically.
To display the raw key stored in your motherboard firmware, open PowerShell as Administrator (right-click the Start button and select Terminal (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin)) and enter:

If your system came with Windows pre-installed, your 25-character alphanumeric key will appear directly in the console.
2. Digital Entitlement (Microsoft Account Linking)
If you upgraded to Windows 10 or 11 during Microsoft’s free upgrade offer, or purchased an upgrade through the Microsoft Store app, you do not have a traditional product key. Instead, your PC uses a Digital License (also called Digital Entitlement).
A digital license creates a hardware signature of your main components and links that entitlement to your Microsoft account. You can verify this under Settings > System > Activation. If your activation state reads “Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account,” you never need to enter a key when reinstalling Windows—simply sign into your Microsoft account during setup.
3. Offline and Physical Storage
If your device lacks an embedded UEFI key or a digital license, check these locations:
- Certificate of Authenticity (COA) Sticker: On older Windows 7-era systems or custom builds from repair shops, look for a sticker on the desktop tower or the bottom of a laptop (sometimes inside the battery bay).
- Order Confirmation Emails: Search your email receipts from Microsoft, Amazon, Newegg, or Best Buy for digital delivery codes.
- Retail Packaging: Boxed retail copies of Windows include the key on a small card inside the box.
Troubleshoot Missing Keys and Activation Issues
Finding a product key or reactivating Windows after a repair does not always go smoothly. Here is how to handle common roadblocks.
Why Key-Finder Scripts Show a Generic Key
If you ran a third-party key extraction tool or script that returned a key ending in -3V66T (Pro) or -8HVX7 (Home), you are looking at a generic default key. When a PC uses Digital Entitlement, Windows replaces the actual product key in the Registry with a generic placeholder string. These placeholder keys instruct the system which edition to install, but cannot activate an unlicensed computer on their own.
Using the Built-in Activation Troubleshooter
If Windows reports that your copy is not genuine or fails to validate your key:
- Go to Settings > System > Activation.
- If the system detects an activation issue, click the Troubleshoot button that appears below your status.
- The utility will query Microsoft’s licensing database, verify your hardware hash against your digital entitlement, and repair corrupt activation tokens automatically.
Reactivating After Hardware Changes
Swapping a graphics card or storage drive will not trip Windows activation. Replacing your motherboard, however, changes your system’s primary hardware signature. Windows will treat the PC as a new machine and deactivate itself.
If you have a Retail license linked to your Microsoft Account, you can re-bind it to your new motherboard:
- Go to Settings > System > Activation and select Troubleshoot.
- Click I changed hardware on this device recently.
- Sign in with your linked Microsoft credentials when prompted.
- Select your previous computer name from the list, check This is the device I’m using right now, and click Activate.
Note on OEM Licenses: If your previous installation was an OEM license, the transfer tool will reject the reactivation request. OEM licenses cannot transfer to a new motherboard unless the replacement board was installed as an exact warranty replacement by the original manufacturer.
Windows Keys
Retail Key: This key is for Full Packaged Product (FPP) or for the boxed copy. You can buy Windows OS from a retail merchant or can directly purchase from Microsoft Store or from other reputed online shops.
OEM Key: This keys are issued by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and are not-for-resale and not intended to transfer to another computer. You will get these keys if you bought a laptop or desktop that comes with a pre-installed Windows version.
Volume Key: These are meant for a large group of computers. KMS (Key Management Services) Client and Volume MAK (Multiple Activation Key) product keys are volume license keys and are not-for-resale. These are normally issued by organizations (eg: Universities) for use on client computers associated with the organization.
To view Operating System Inforamtion
Select the start button, then go to settings, then about. Simply type about in Windows search bar will display ‘about your PC‘.
Another method, press the Windows logo key + R, opens up ‘Run’ window. Type winver in the open box, and select OK, you can see the version of Windows in a popup box. You can just type winver in Windows search box will display winver Run command.
By using Commands
Don’t be afraid to work with Command prompt. Just type cmd in the Windows search box. Windows ‘Command Prompt’ will display as the first search result. Right click on the ‘Command Prompt‘, select and click ‘Run as administrator‘. Then click ‘yes‘. The command prompt window is opened up, and displays: C:\windows\system32>
Type slmgr /dli
Just wait for a second til a popup box will display with Windows information. The box will display the current license information of Windows with activation status and last 5 characters of the partial product key.
You can also check the following commands to obtain various information. Just type slmgr , it displays the usage of SLMgr (refer to the screenshot below).
Typing slmgr /dlv
Displays detailed license information, it is similar to -dli but offers more information.
Typing slmgr /xpr
It displays the expiration date of the current license.
